Yash’s upcoming film Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups is enjoying strong pre-release buzz. Expectations are high, with many predicting a major box office run.
Directed by Geetu Mohandas, the period gangster drama is being mounted on a big scale, especially for the North American market.
According to sources, Toxic needs to collect around $6.5 million across all languages to reach breakeven in North America. This is the highest breakeven target ever set for Yash in that territory.
The film is said to be on a refundable deal. This means that if Toxic fails to reach breakeven, the losses can be adjusted using profits from another film produced by the same banner.
The breakeven target of Toxic is significantly higher than many recent Indian releases in North America.
Chiranjeevi’s Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu had a breakeven target of around $3.5 million, nearly half of Toxic. Akhanda 2 needed about $2.5 million to break even.
Toxic’s target is on par with Ram Charan’s Peddi, which also had a $6.5 million breakeven. However, it is still below Prabhas’s The Raja Saab, which carried a massive $7.5 million breakeven target.
Yash’s biggest North American success so far remains KGF: Chapter 2, which earned an impressive $7.5 million in 2022.
The stakes are clearly very high for Toxic. Adding to the challenge, the film will face competition from Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar: The Revenge.
Directed by Aditya Dhar, the first Dhurandhar performed exceptionally well in the USA and Canada, and the sequel is expected to raise the bar further.
How well Toxic holds its ground in North America remains to be seen, but expectations — and risks — are undeniably high.
