Centre opposes Shivadhar Reddy as Telangana DGP

The Supreme Court of India on Thursday heard a petition filed by the Unoin Public Service Commission challenging the appointment of B Shivadhar Reddy as Director General of Police (DGP) of Telangana.

Earlier, the Telangana high court had upheld Reddy’s appointment. Challenging the high court’s verdict, the UPSC approached the Supreme Court seeking suspension of the DGP appointment.

A Supreme Court bench led by Justice Surya Kant, heard arguments from all sides and reserved its directions after concluding the hearing.

In its order, the Supreme Court directed both the UPSC and the Telangana government to complete the process for appointing a full-time DGP within four weeks.  Readmore!

The court made it clear that the selection process must be carried out in coordination between the UPSC and the state government.

The apex court also modified the Telangana high court’s ruling, directing the authorities to consider the proposals sent by the state government in April last year while finalising the appointment.

The order aims to ensure adherence to the prescribed procedure and bring clarity to the long-pending issue of a regular DGP appointment in Telangana.
