If YSR Congress party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has his way, the pilgrim town of Tirupati will soon become liquor-free.
A decision to this effect was taken at the meeting of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams trust board held in Tirumala on Wednesday.
TTD trust board chairman Y V Subba Reddy told media that the board had resolved to enforce ban on liquor sales in Tirupati town on the lines of Tirumala
“A proposal will be sent to the state government for the consent of the chief minister to make Tirupati liquor-free,” Subba Reddy said.
He said the chief minister was firm on a complete liquor ban in the State.
"In Tirumala liquor is banned since several decades. As Tirupati is also happens to be the prime pilgrim city, we have resolved in the board to observe total liquor ban in Tirupati also", he added.
Similarly, to protect the environs of Tirumala a total plastic ban will be achieved by Sankranti next, the TTD board chief said.
He said the works of Garuda Varadhi at Alipiri would be be continued after redesigning was done for the project.
The board also resolved to merge Sri Venkateswara Institution of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) into TTD.
It also proposed to construct a Spiritual City in Tirupati which also includes darshan ticket counters, a spiritual theatre showcasing animated version of mythology to children etc. for the sake of the pilgrims reducing the pressure in Tirumala.
