Srisailam reservoir on Krishna river is almost reaching its full reservoir level with heavy inflows from upstream.
The authorities on Thursday even lifted 10 gates to release water to the downstream.
Yet, the Telangana government doesn’t want the water from Srisalam to be released to Rayalaseema through Pothireddypadu head regulator. It has written a letter to this effect to the Krishna River Management Board on Thursday.
In the letter, Telangana irrigation engineer-in-chief C Muralidhar requested the KRMB to stop Andhra Pradesh from drawing water from Pothireddypadu without the approval of the three-member committee constituted to look into water releases in Krishna projects.
He argued that the Krishna river water should be used for irrigation only for the ayacut in Krishna basin, but should not be diverted to other river basin like Pennar, which covers Rayalaseema.
Muralidhar said the Telangana government had no objection if Andhra Pradesh utilises water from the Srisailam reservoir for power generation through hydel power plants on its side.
He suggested that maximum power generation be allowed at Srisailam, Nagarjunasagar and Pulichintala.
It may be recalled that Andhra Pradesh raised objection to Telangana generating hydel power at Srisailam, Nagarjunasagar and Pulichintala, stating that it would deprive Rayalaseema of irrigation facilities.
Now, Telangana says it has objection to release of water for AP to generate hydel power, but not for irrigation in Rayalaseema!
