Telangana’s leading distributors and exhibitors have been demanding a percentage-based revenue model instead of the rental system for screening films. However, producers have been resisting this shift.
As a result, “Jetlee,” presented by Mythri Movie Makers and distributed by their own firm in Telangana, is not being screened in theatres owned by Asian Cinemas, SVC, and other exhibitor groups in the region.
Mythri, however, is not overly concerned, as the film is a low-budget venture.
Despite the ongoing boycott by Asian and SVC groups, industry insiders believe the issue may be resolved soon. Many expect the stalemate to end with the release of Ram Charan’s “Peddi” in June.
The assumption is that exhibitors cannot afford to skip a big-star film, which could force both sides to arrive at a compromise.
With May largely featuring small-budget releases, any continued boycott is unlikely to have a major impact.
The real test will come when a star-driven film like “Peddi” hits theatres, potentially bringing an end to the rental vs percentage debate.
