A Supreme Court bench on Tuesday dismissed a batch of petitions seeking dismissal of YSR Congress party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy for making baseless allegations against SC judge N V Ramana.
The petitioners questioned the propriety of Jagan writing a letter to Chief Justice of India S A Bobde making frivolous charges against SC judge Justice N V Ramana and a few other high court judges, besides leaking the letter to the media.
A division bench of Supreme Court led by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul refused to entertain the petitions on the ground that a similar matter is already pending before another bench.
The bench observed that there was no merit in the petitions at all, as it was the discretion of the CJI to decide whether to order an inquiry or not.
"When another bench us already hearing some of the issues and has also passed an interim order lifting the gag order against the media, why should we entertain these petitions? Let that bench examine everything," Justice Kaul remarked.
On the demand for an inquiry into the leakage of letter, the SC bench said there was no need for any inquiry when the letter had already been in the public domain.
“The problem is when you read something in a newspaper & file a petition with all kinds of prayers," the bench said.
On another petition asking for a restraint against Jagan to make further statements on the Amravati land scam, the bench sought to know the purpose of the petition when the gag order had already been lifted by this court.
The petition to restrain Jagan from passing any comment against a sitting SC judge has been tagged with another matter, already pending before a bench led by Justice Ashok Bhushan.
