Relief to Sharmila, as EC registers YSRTP

In a big relief to Y S Sharmila, sister of Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Election Commission on Wednesday communicated to her stating that it has registered her political party in the name of “YSR Telangana party.”

In a communication sent to her, the EC said following the application made by her in December 2020, it had gone into all the documents produced in support of the application and the submissions made by authorized representative(s) of the party before the Commission on 17.01.2022.

It also gone into the objections raised by some parties over the registration the party under the name YSR Telangana Party" in response to the Public Notice published by the applicant in the newspapers and found that the objections were unsustainable.

“So, the EC has registered the YSR Telangana Party" as a political party under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 on and with effect from February 16, 2022,” the communication said.

The party can intimate to the EC at the earliest, if it wants to make any changes in the name, head office, office bearers or address after following a due procedure.

The communication resulted in big celebrations in the Lotus Pond office of the party and Sharmila cut the cake to celebrate the registration of the party.

In January, the EC kept in abeyance the registration of YSRTP, following a representation from one Mahabub Basha from Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh, stating that the name “YSR Telangana Party” resembles “Anna YSR Congress Party,” floated by him and for which he was the president.

He complained that Sharmila’s party name would create troubles for his party, which was registered as a political party in both the Telugu states. So, he requested that the EC should not register the name YSR Telangana Party.

But later, the EC heard the representation from Sharmila’s team and rejected Mahabub Basha’s plea.
