The much-awaited release of Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan has been officially postponed.
The confirmation came on January 7 from the film’s distributors in Europe and Malaysia, just two days before the movie was originally scheduled to release in theatres.
Sharing the update on X, the overseas distributors issued a detailed statement confirming the delay.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, the initial release of Jana Nayagan, scheduled for January 9, 2026, has been postponed to a later date. We are currently awaiting further updates from the production team. Once the new release date is finalised, official announcements will be made through authorised platforms,” the statement said.
The distributors also appealed to fans to remain calm amid the uncertainty. They urged supporters not to spread or engage with unverified information and requested patience, stating that several arrangements are still in progress.
The note called for unity and responsible behaviour while awaiting a positive resolution.
The postponement comes amid a legal tussle over the film’s certification. On Wednesday, the Madras High Court reserved its verdict on the film’s scheduled release day, January 9, after the makers sought legal clarity regarding the censor process.
The court also directed that Jana Nayagan be reviewed by a fresh committee of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The issue has also impacted the film’s multi-language release plans.
CBFC clearance for the original Tamil version is mandatory before approvals can be granted for the dubbed Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada versions, effectively putting the entire release on hold.
The producers approached the court after the film failed to secure certification despite being submitted more than a month ago.
Earlier, on December 19, the CBFC had reportedly suggested certain cuts and muted dialogues.
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan features an ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani and Narain.
Touted as Thalapathy Vijay’s final film before his full-time entry into politics, the project now faces its biggest hurdle as fans await clarity on a new release date.
