Huge Losses in Malayalam Cinema Exposed

The Kerala Film Producers’ Association (KFPA) has revealed alarming losses in the Malayalam film industry, with only one hit among 17 films released in February.

The association reported a total budget of Rs 75.23 crore but theatre earnings of just Rs 23.55 crore. The worst-performing film, Lovedale, collected only Rs 10,000, while Officer on Duty was the sole success, earning Rs 11 crore.

KFPA vice-president G Suresh Kumar stated that inflated box office figures had misled the public, leading to unjustified salary demands from top actors and technicians. The association now plans to release earnings data monthly to maintain transparency.

In 2024 alone, Malayalam cinema has suffered Rs 700 crore in losses. January recorded a Rs 110 crore deficit with 28 film releases.
