The sequel to the 1996 cult classic drama "Indian" was released in theaters yesterday, July 12.
Directed by Shankar, "Indian 2" stars Kamal Haasan, Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh, Bobby Simha, Priya Bhavani Shankar, SJ Suryah, and Samuthirakani, among others, in lead roles.
The film, released in Tamil, Telugu (as "Bharateeyudu 2"), and Hindi (as "Hindustani 2"), received mixed reviews from fans and moviegoers.
Initially expected to gross Rs 50 crore at the box office on its first day, the movie managed to earn only Rs 26 crore in India due to multiple negative reviews.
According to Sacnilk, the film made Rs 17 crore in Tamil, Rs 7.7 crore in Telugu, and Rs 1.2 crore in Hindi. In addition to the Rs 26 crore collection in India, the film is said to have earned $1 million in North America.
"Indian 2: Zero Tolerance" is a vigilante action thriller with Kamal Haasan reprising his role as the freedom fighter Senapathi, who is against corruption.
The sequel did not live up to the original, leaving fans disappointed with both the actor and the director for losing their touch.
"Indian 2" did not surpass Kamal Haasan's last two films at the box office. "Kalki 2898 AD" made Rs 95 crore, while "Vikram," directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, earned Rs 66 crore on its first day.
Similarly, Kamal Haasan's other sequel, "Vishwaroopam 2," released in 2018, also did not perform as well as the first part.
While "Vishwaroopam" grossed Rs 20 crore on its opening day, the sequel managed to earn only Rs 7.7 crore.
