Direct OTT Releases Fail, Exhibitors Celebrate!

The much-hyped direct digital movie releases such as Bollywood biggie “Gulabo Sitabo”, Keerthy Suresh’s trilingual “Penguin”, and Jyothika starrer Tamil movie “Ponmagal Vandhal” have received poor response from the regular home viewers.

The audiences’ reaction has been underwhelming.

There is no way to assess how much these films have contributed the subscribers base to the OTT platforms as the companies don’t reveal the numbers.

The social media which is considered as a barometer to know the audiences’ mood for such streaming movies has scathing remarks to say about these movies.

The movie exhibitors who have been opposing the plans of producers to subvert the theatrical window are now rejoicing. This is a blessing for the theater owners.

The more the underwhelming response for OTT releases the better for the cinema halls.

The exhibitors feel that audiences would now flock to theaters as soon as this pandemic comes under control.

All the cinema halls and multiplexes across the nation have remained shut for the past three months. The Union government is expected to give its nod to the reopening of cinema halls in August or September.
