The H-1B lottery deadline is drawing near, and everyone is anxious about their chances of winning. In 2021, USCIS received 274,237 H-1B registrations. The number of H-1B registrations increased to 308,613 in 2022, and in 2023, it significantly rose to 483,927. In 2024, it completely spiraled out to 780,884 registrations for the H-1B lottery.
The US economy and stock market are very strong. FAANG (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Google), chip companies like NVIDIA, and AI companies are experiencing an extreme shortage of IT specialists and will apply for a massive number of H-1B registrations this year.
There is a good chance that a new president will be elected next year for the United States and may enforce stricter regulations for H-1B visas. Therefore, Indian implementation partners will also apply for a high number of H-1B registrations this year.
However, USCIS is strictly implementing the one beneficiary, one H-1B registration rule. Hence, an educated guess would be that there will be 400,000 to 450,000 H-1B registrations this year. The number of H-1B visas is 65,000 for the general quota and an extra 20,000 for the master's quota. Hence, the chances of winning the lottery are approximately 1:7.
There are still two to three weeks left to file for H-1B registration. People who work under Indian implementation partners should realize the reality of their situation. Indian implementation partners may never file the H-1B visa due to seniority or favoritism issues.
Even if they are sponsored for an H-1B visa by an Indian implementation partner, their green card will not be filed until the fifth year of H-1B, and they may be sent back to their home country with minimal notice at any time. It is better for employees working under Indian implementation partners to apply for the H-1B registration through a boutique IT consulting firm.
