Varanasi: Big Film, Bigger OTT Bluff?

Director Rajamouli knows how to create hype without spending big. Just two flexis in Varanasi were enough to make social media talk nonstop about the release date.

Now, even though the film is still a year away, buzz has already shifted to the OTT deal.

This is a massive project worth hundreds of crores. Naturally, the makers want a huge OTT price. Only global platforms like Netflix or brand-hungry players like JioHotstar can even think in that range.

But here’s the problem; the OTT market is currently down. Readmore!

Ideally, the OTT deal should have been locked at the time of the title announcement or glimpse release. That did not happen. Months later, suddenly the release date was announced and Rajamouli team started giving international interviews; clear signs that OTT talks are still on.

Trade circles say expectations of ₹600–700 crore from OTT are unrealistic in today’s market. For comparison, Prabhas’ Spirit is said to have fetched around ₹170 crore. Even after adding pan-India and pan-world value, reaching ₹650 crore looks tough.

If such a massive deal had actually been closed, news of it would have leaked by now. Once an OTT deal is done, makers usually shift focus to finishing the film fast.

For now, it’s clear; the hype is strong, the film is big, but the OTT deal is still very much up in the air.
