Selfiee, a Hindi film starring Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi, had a disappointing first weekend, earning a little over â¹10 crore nett.
It is a remake of the 2019 Malayalam film, Driving Licence, which starred Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu.
This marks the latest in a series of underperforming films for Akshay, including Bachchhan Paandey, Samrat Prithviraj, Raksha Bandhan, and Ram Setu from last year.
The film, directed by Raj Mehta, earned â¹2.60 crore on Friday, â¹3.75 crore on Saturday, and only â¹3.85 crore on Sunday. According to Box Office India, the first weekend collections for Selfiee stand at approximately â¹10.20 crore net.
This is said to be Akshay's lowest opening in a decade, and the actor is also a producer on the project. Nushrratt Bharuccha and Diana Penty also star in the film, marking the first time the lead actors have worked together.
Akshay had previously worked with director Raj Mehta in his directorial debut, Good Newwz (2019), which also starred Kareena Kapoor, Diljit Dosanjh, and Kiara Advani.
In a recent interview with Aaj Tak, Akshay spoke about taking responsibility and shared that he had experienced similar setbacks earlier in his career. He acknowledged that the audience has changed and that he needs to change and reinvent himself accordingly.
Despite the film's poor performance, Akshay has a busy year ahead. He is set to embark on a concert tour called The Entertainers with Nora Fatehi, Disha Patani, Mouni Roy, and Sonam Bajwa in the US.
He will also be seen in OMG 2 – Oh My God! 2, the Hindi remake of Soorarai Pottru, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, and the Jaswant Singh Gill biopic later this year.
