The Covid-19 pandemic dominated conversations on microblogging platform Twitter this year with people seeking 'reliable information', connecting with experts and following what was happening in 'real-time', the company said on Tuesday while revealing top trending hashtags and tweets of 2020.

Twitter said conversations on the service revolved around multiple Coronavirus-related topics, including the need to #WearAMask. Tweets expressing being grateful or thankful increased by 20% globally, with a particular recognition of doctors (+135%) and teachers (+30%), the platform said.

Beyond Covid-19, fans paid tribute to late actor Sushant Singh Rajput and his career, and denounced the alleged rape of a young Dalit woman in Hathras.

Twitter said in terms of sports chatter, #IPL2020, #WhistlePodu and #TeamIndia were the most tweeted hashtags. Readmore!

For movies and television, there were more than 7,000 tweets per minute globally this year.

In India, the Bollywood film #DilBechara, Tamil film #SooraraiPottru and Telugu film #SarileruNeekevvaru were the most tweeted about films to release this year, and people took a minute to laugh at the relatability of #Binod, making it the most Tweeted meme.

Vijay’s (@actorvijay) selfie tweet with his fans, Virat Kohli (@imVkohli) and Anushka Sharma’s (@AnushkaSharma) celebratory news about the latter's pregnancy, Ratan Tata’s (@RNTata2000) tweet pledging support to impacted communities and Amitabh Bachchan’s (@SrBachchan) tweet about Covid-19, were among the golden tweets of 2020 or the tweets that became the most retweeted, liked and quoted on the service.

Vijay’s (@actorvijay) tweet of a selfie with his fans was the most retweeted tweet of 2020 while Virat Kohli’s (@imVkohli) celebratory Tweet announcing Anushka Sharma’s (@AnushkaSharma) pregnancy was the most liked tweet of 2020, Twitter said.

Covid-19, Sushant Singh Rajput and Hathras made it to the most tweeted hashtags in current affairs.

IPL 2020 and Rajput's Dil Bechara emerged as the top sports and movie hashtags, while Binod became the most tweeted about meme of 2020.
