The story-telling has its flaws, but the characters are intriguing. What’s impressive is the massive canvas the film is mounted on. Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy might work only in bits and pieces, but the scenes in which the film works makes it all worthwhile!

At a runtime of nearly 170 minutes, Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy tells a fascinating story about a rebellion that’s never been explored in Telugu cinema. Despite the familiarity of the genre, the film relies quite a lot on Chiranjeevi’s screen presence. And he packs a punch and how.

The major flaw of Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy is that it’s too formulaic. You can almost guess what’s going to happen and with a runtime of 2 hours and 47 minutes, the film is a tad bit long. Even though the stunt sequences seem superficial, they are good to watch on the big screen. Cinematographer Rathnavelu’s work is exceptional. The use of colours, lens flare and framing elevates the film.

Chiranjeevi might be introduced to the audience while in meditation, under water, but the film does all it can to play to his superstar image. You could debate if some of the conversations and slogans actually happened, or give in and see how well the crowd-pleasing format has been pulled off. Chiranjeevi leads from the front, showing that he isn’t done yet and is still a superstar. It’s one of his memorable performances too.

Hindustantimes
Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy has some jagged edges and in the hands of, say, a Rajamouli, it would’ve been a far better film. Surender Reddy may not have done a great job in handling the subject but he succeeds in making it accessible to the masses, and in the process, delivers a film that scores high on emotions and drama.

Deccanchronicle
The film’s high technical values definitely lift the Telugu cinema’s standards. Cinematography by Ratnavelu is a boon for the film, especially his capture of locations as well as the battle-scenes. Burra Sai Madhav’s dialogues are well-timed, some of them enthralling too. The background music is good and elevates the scenes.

Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy is a good watch. Telugu cinema, which was going places after Baahubali, gets still further with this film.

Sye Raa has enough strength to start a rebellion even today. It is a tale of how the warrior changed the future with his life and even in death.
