Can Sujana Chowdary fight direct elections?

Rajya Sabha member Y S Chowdary, who defected from Telugu Desam Party to the Bharatiya Janata Party last month, is basically an industrialist with no base in the masses.

During his stint in the TDP over the last 15 years, Chowdary, popularly known as Sujana Chowdary, had only been a backroom worker for the party and had never gone into the people.

He never contested any direct election despite being a big financier for the TDP.

He got into the upper house only through his money power and the backing of TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu. But, finally, he jumped the fence into the BJP.

So, when Chowdary told media in Vijayawada on Sunday that he was ready to contest the direct elections next time if the BJP central leadership asks him to do so, it sounded ridiculous.

The man who is known to people as an industrialist who defaulted on loans and allegedly resorted to money laundering thinks the people would vote for him.

First of all, one wonders whether the people of Andhra Pradesh would vote for the BJP at all, even if all the TDP leaders join the party. They have already shown the door to the saffron party as they did in the case of the Congress.

Secondly, there is little chance of the people voting for Sujana Chowdary who has absolutely no principles at all, irrespective of how much money he might pump in the elections.

Therefore, it is better Sujana continues to sustain in politics through indirect methods like Rajya Sabha member or even an MLC.
