MAVIGUN proposal, a wakeup call for Naidu?

The MAVIGUN (Machilipatnam–Vijayawada–Guntur) concept, floated by Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy as an alternative to Amaravati as the capital city, is being seen as a wake-up call for Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, say analysts.

A veteran journalist, in his editorial comments, pointed out that if Naidu takes the development of Amaravati for granted and fails to complete the project within the next three years, there is a strong possibility that Jagan may dismantle the capital project altogether if he returns to power.

According to him, Amaravati’s future depends on how quickly the present government executes the capital city project.

He warned that delays, overreliance on visual projections, and a lack of tangible progress could make the capital politically vulnerable. Readmore!

“If Jagan returns to power, his first decision may be to abandon or undo Amaravati’s development. That is why he and his party leaders are aggressively pushing the MAVIGUN proposal, while TDP leaders are struggling to counter this argument,” he said.

The TDP leadership has so far failed to effectively convey to the public that the MAVIGUN concept is impractical and administratively inefficient.

“The idea of a 180-kilometre-long distributed capital, with government offices spread out, is unrealistic and poses serious challenges in governance coordination, legislative functioning, and bureaucratic communication. Yet, it has become a talking point among the people,” he noted.

The editorial also flagged that allegations of corruption in Amaravati’s construction, inflated costs, and irregular land allocations have created a negative perception among the public.

“Moreover, there are no concrete proposals from the government to make Amaravati a liveable city, let alone a ‘Praja Rajadhani’,” he added.

The analyst advised the government to accelerate construction on a war footing, warning that failure to do so would not only jeopardize the capital project but also betray the farmers who gave up their lands.
