Blast at Fireworks Unit in Andhra Pradesh: 18 Dead

A massive explosion rocked a fireworks manufacturing unit in Samarlakota mandal of Kakinada district, Andhra Pradesh, on Saturday afternoon, killing at least 18 people.

The blast occurred around 2 pm at the Suryasri Fireworks Centre, located near the Godavari Canal in the Vetlapalem area.

Locals said the explosion was so powerful that it was heard up to five kilometres away. Thick smoke spread across the area as a huge fire broke out following the blast.

Fire department personnel rushed to the spot and are battling the blaze with at least two fire engines. Eight people sustained serious injuries and were shifted to hospital by ambulance.

As per the latest reports, explosions were still continuing at the factory, making rescue operations difficult.

The fireworks unit, which consists of six sheds, is said to be operated by family members of Adapa Nani and is located in agricultural fields along Pedapudi Road.

Authorities are yet to confirm the cause of the explosion, and further investigation is underway.
