The committee has been mandated to examine key water management issues in a comprehensive and technical manner, address outstanding concerns, and suggest viable solutions to ensure equitable and efficient sharing of water between the two states.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within three months, the official note said.

Union minister G Kishan Reddy said the setting up of the committee is in line with the Union government’s principle of “cooperative federalism”.

He said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre has been extending complete cooperation for the past 11 years towards resolving water related issues between the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The setting up of the committee is an outcome of protracted discussions between the states and the Centre.

On July 16, 2025, a meeting was held in the Capital, chaired by Union minister for water resources CR Patil, and attended by chief ministers A Revanth Reddy and N Chandrababu Naidu.

During the meeting, it was decided that a committee would be constituted, comprising representatives from the Centre and the two sides, to examine the issues from a technical perspective.
