Telugu Desam Party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu is said to be a little concerned over the progress of works in Amaravati capital city and worried whether the capital city would take a shape by next elections in 2029.
Though APCRDA authorities have been claiming that the works worth Rs 60,000 crore have been going on at a brisk pace, officials and political observers express serious doubts about timely completion.
At present, most of the works being executed at a faster pace are those that were pending from the first term of the TDP government. Some road projects are progressing relatively well.
However, construction of key and iconic government buildings—considered crucial to the capital’s identity—continues to move at a sluggish pace, according to officials. Several TDP leaders privately share similar concerns.
Naidu, who reviewed the works at a recent APCRDA meeting, is learnt to have asked whether it would be possible to bring them to a shape by 2028 at least. “If the Amaravati government complex has to be completed within three years, it would require an extraordinary pace of execution,” an official said.
An analysts say the APCRDA authorities and municipal administration minister P Narayana are more interested in approving the contracts and awarding the same, rather than focussing on the on-ground works.
Sources said unless the chief minister himself monitors the progress of works from time to time, the works will not be completed within the deadline. “A robust oversight mechanism has to be put in place for the construction of new iconic buildings and infrastructure in Amaravati,” an analyst added.
