Chiyaan Vikram’s Thangalaan, his only release this year, struggled both in theaters and on OTT.
Despite high expectations, the Tamil action drama earned a disappointing â¹71.45 crore worldwide during its theatrical run.
The film made its Netflix debut on December 10 but faced lukewarm reception on the platform as well.
According to Netflix data from December 9 to December 15, Thangalaan garnered just 1.5 million views in its debut week, making it one of the least-viewed South Indian films in its opening week on the platform.
For comparison, Lucky Baskhar set a benchmark with 5.1 million views in its best week. Thangalaan fell short by a staggering 70% in its debut viewership.
Thangalaan now holds the dubious distinction of having the second lowest debut-week views for a South Indian film on Netflix.
The record for the least-viewed title remains with Ravi Teja’s Mr. Bachchan, which managed only 1 million views after a similarly poor theatrical performance.
This marks another setback for Thangalaan, which struggled to make an impact despite the star power of Chiyaan Vikram.
