Relief to JSP, as it gets glass tumbler symbol

In a big relief to Jana Sena Party headed by power star Pawan Kalyan, the Andhra Pradesh high court on Tuesday upheld the allocation of “glass tumbler” symbol to the party by the Election Commission of India.

The EC had earlier declared glass tumbler as one of the free election symbols available with it, but had used its discretion to allot it as a common symbol for Jana Sena Party, despite the fact that it is still a registered party but not the recognised party.

However, another political outfit – Rashtriya Praja Congress (Secular) Party, moved the high court challenging the decision of the Election Commission to allot glass tumbler symbol to Jana Sena.

It argued that it had applied for the same symbol much before the Jana Sena Party approached the EC for its allotment. The high court heard the arguments of both the parties and reserved its judgement.

On Tuesday, it finally struck down the petition of the Rashtriya Praja Congress (Secular), stating that the Jana Sena Party has contested the last elections too on the same symbol and hence, it would be given the preference.
