43 cases in 12 hrs in AP: Why sudden spurt?

The sudden spurt in the number of Coronavirus positive cases in the last 12 hours in Andhra Pradesh sent the people and the state government in a tizzy.

In an unprecedented manner, the state had witnessed as many as 43 positive cases between 9 pm on Tuesday and 9 am on Wednesday, taking the overall number of positive cases in the state to 87.

This is apart from two persons – one in Nellore and another in Visakhapatnam, who had already recovered from the disease and were discharged from the hospitals last week.

According to a health bulletin by the AP government, as many as 373 samples were tested in the last 12 hours, of which 330 samples tested negative and the remaining 43 tested positive.

Most of the positive cases were 15 from Kadapa, followed by 13 in West Godavari, five in Chittoor, four in Prakasam, two each in East Godavari and Nellore and one each in Krishna and Visakhapatnam.

Such a huge number of cases sent shock waves in the state, as it was only on Tuesday that advisor to chief minister (public affairs) Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy announced that the number of Coronavirus cases in Andhra Pradesh was much less compared to other states in the country and the state was taking strong measures to contain the spread of Coronavirus.

Apparently, the huge increase in the number of cases is attributed to the large number of people returning from Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Nizamuddin in Delhi back to AP.

More than 700 people from the state had been identified as having attended the Jamaat conference.

It is possible that most of the new cases were these people who had returned from New Delhi after attending the Jamaat conference. The government is yet to give a clarification in this regard.
