Even before the dust raised during the recently concluded assembly elections in Telangana settled down, political atmosphere in Telangana has once again started heating up gradually as the general elections to Lok Sabha are fast approaching.
The Bharatiya Janata Party might have won only a single digit in the assembly elections but it has gained a lot of confidence by putting up an impressive show in Telangana by improving its vote share to over 13.90 percent.
The saffron party, which won four Lok Sabha seats in 2019, is hoping to improve its tally to at least eight seats.
As part of the strategy, the party leadership is understood to have requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Telangana.
Needless to say, it was Modi’s election rallies which turned the tide in favour of the BJP in several constituencies and help it win good percentage of votes.
If Modi can contest the Lok Sabha polls from Telangana, there is every possibility that the party would reap rich benefits.
Sources said there is a talk in the party that Modi would contest the Lok Sabha elections from Malkajgiri parliamentary constituency, the biggest in the entire country in terms of area and electorate. Since it is an urban constituency with a massive cadre base for the BJP, Modi will definitely win the seat, sources said.
On the other hand, the Congress, too, is planning to rope in its veteran leader Sonia Gandhi to contest from Telangana.
The Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the TPCC adopted a resolution on Monday requesting Sonia Gandhi to contest from the Medak Lok Sabha constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Indira Gandhi was elected to the seventh Lok Sabha from both Rae Bareli (UP) and Medak (then in Andhra Pradesh) in January 1980. She won both seats, but retained Medak, vacating Rae Bareli. She represented Medak until her assassination on 31 October, 1984.
If Sonia and Modi agree to the proposals to contest from Telangana, it would be an interesting battle her as the state would attract the attention of the entire nation!
