MLA Raja Singh arrested for anti-Islam comments

The Hyderabad police on Tuesday arrested Bharatiya Janata Party law maker T Raja Singh after booking a criminal case against for his alleged blasphemous comments against Prophet Mohammad hurting the sentiments of the Muslim community.

Acting on a complaint lodged by AIMIM Malakpet legislator Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala and other Muslim social activists, the Dabeerpura police registered the first information report (FIR) against Singh.

The MLA was charged with allegedly making certain remarks against Prophet Mohammad in a video, which was uplinked on a YouTube channel by name “Sree Ram Channel, Telangana” late on Monday night. The YouTube link of the video, however, has been taken off from public viewing immediately.

“A case was registered against the MLA under Section 153 (A) (Promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion); 295 (A) (Making comments in words or in writing with deliberate and malicious intention of outraging the religious feelings of any class), 505 (1) (B) (C) (making statements that incite communal violence), 505 (2) (making statements to create enmity and hatred between classes) and 506 (criminal intimidation),” Dabeerpura inspector of police G Koteshwara Rao said. The complainant alleged that Singh had uploaded the video using vulgar language against the Prophet, hurting the sentiments of the Muslim community.

Protests erupted in different parts of the city against Singh for his alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammed. Scores of people gathered at different police stations in the city and started to protest. 

A large number of people gathered at the Commissioner’s Office at Basheerbagh and started a protest. Similar protests were organized at Bhavaninagar, Dabeerpura, Nampally and a few other police stations.

Senior police officials rushed to their offices to supervise the security arrangements and force deployment in the city to prevent any communal flare up.

Meanwhile security is beefed up in the city following the last night incident. Police pickets are posted at all communally sensitive areas of the city. Senior police officials are monitoring the situation.
