Direct OTT Release: Pressure Mounting on Tollywood

Seven Indian films, including two Bollywood biggies starring Amitabh Bachchan and Vidya Balan, and a Keerthy Suresh starrer Telugu-Tamil movie will stream directly on Amazon Prime Video skipping theatrical release.

Keerthy Suresh’s “Penguin”, Amitabh Bachchan’s “Gulabo Sitabo” and Vidya Balan’s “Shakuntala Devi” will stream shortly. 

This is a paradigm shift in the Indian film industry.

Now, the floodgates have opened. As Bollywood, Kollywood, Mollywood, and Sandalwood producers have sold off direct digital rights of upcoming movies, the pressure is mounting on Tollywood producers to follow the same.

Amazon Prime had already quoted a great price to Telugu films such as Anushka’s “Nishabdham”, Nani’s “V”, and Raj Tarun’s “Orey Bujigaa” but the respective producers were hopeful that things would become brighter, and lockdown would be lifted in June.

The current trend suggests that the theaters will not resume their operations until August.

Some of these Telugu films would now clinch the deal without hesitation.
