Chiyaan Vikram’s Thangalaan was the biggest release from Kollywood this Independence Day.
Given the significance of the holiday, the film was anticipated to perform exceptionally well on its opening day. However, it managed only a decent start, earning just over â¹20 crore.
While this figure appears respectable on its own, it falls short for a mega-budget film costing over â¹100 crore.
Directed by Pa. Ranjith, the film garnered mostly positive reviews from critics.
Audience feedback has also been favorable, particularly regarding Vikram's performance and the cast's efforts.
Nonetheless, the film’s unconventional subject and treatment raised concerns about its commercial potential, and those concerns are now becoming a reality.
On its opening day, Thangalaan grossed â¹20.19 crore worldwide, including â¹15.69 crore from India (â¹13.30 crore net) and â¹4.50 crore from overseas. Despite positive word-of-mouth, the film experienced a significant 62% drop in its second day’s earnings.
On Day 2, Thangalaan brought in â¹7.66 crore gross, a sharp decline from the opening day. The film earned â¹5.66 crore gross (â¹4.80 crore net) in India on Friday, with an additional â¹2 crore gross from overseas.
After two days, the domestic total stands at â¹18.10 crore net, with a gross of â¹21.35 crore in India. Internationally, the film has earned â¹6.50 crore so far, bringing the worldwide box office collection to â¹27.85 crore gross.
Thangalaan was produced on a budget of â¹135 crore. Against this cost, the film has earned only â¹18.10 crore in India to date, meaning it needs an additional â¹116.90 crore to cover its production costs.
