AP going Brazil way in welfare schemes, says IYR

Known for his pungent comments on the social media, former chief secretary of Andhra Pradesh IYR Krishna Rao found fault with Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy government for implementing welfare schemes that have become a big burden on the state exchequer and later diluting the same in the name of fine-tuning them.

Krishna Rao took to Twitter to convey the message that the implementation of so-called welfare schemes by resorting heavy borrowings would ruin the state’s financial health.

“The Jagan government will have to meet the same fate of the governments in various countries like Brazil, which have lured the people with unrealistic populist schemes,” he said.

Referring to the latest restrictions on Amma Vodi scheme of the Jagan government, the former chief secretary reminded that the Brazil government, too, had in the past introduced a big populist scheme without assessing its financial implications and burden on the budget.  Readmore!

“Later, it could not find resources to implement the scheme as the budgetary allocation was insufficient. As a result, the Brazil government had to impose several conditions on the scheme and finally diluted it. In the subsequent elections, the government had lost the power,” Krishna Rao said, indirectly sending warning signals to the Jagan government.

Obviously, the tweet was referring to the latest conditions imposed by the Jagan government to implement Amma Vodi scheme.

According to these conditions, the scheme would not be applicable to those households that used above 300 units of electricity per month and for students whose attendance fell below 75 percent.

The government also decided to stop Amma Vodi scheme, if the beneficiaries would not update the new district in their Aadhaar.

Moreover, the beneficiaries should necessarily have a new rice card. Moreover, the students and mothers should be in the same house as per the new household survey.

The students should also update the E-KYC by approaching the village volunteers. They should also get it verified whether their bank accounts have Aadhaar linking and whether the account is in operation.
