NRI Alert: Beware Of Tenants in Your Properties

Many Indians own properties in the USA for residential purposes, which is common practice. Additionally there are those who own multiple properties and rent them out to individuals or families, similar to practices in India.

But there are instances where tenants fail to pay rent and resist vacating the premises. Such individuals are referred to as 'squatters,' unlawfully occupying uninhabited buildings or unused land. Evicting such squatters may unexpectedly lead to legal consequences.

Recently, a 47 year old woman from New York City, Adele Andaloro, was arrested for attempting to remove squatters from her residence in Flushing, Queens. Despite her efforts to sell the $1 million home inherited from her parents, the squatters refused to leave.

Under New York's tenant laws, squatters gain rights after 30 days of illegal occupation. Consequently the squatters contacted the police when Andaloro attempted eviction which resulted in her arrest.

Such laws are prevalent throughout the nation of the USA. Therefore, the property owners in the USA should be familiar with relevant laws before renting out their properties. Failure to do so may lead to legal complications if tenants turn into squatters.
