Indian Box Office Surges to 3rd Place in 2023

In 2023, India witnessed the third-highest box office collection worldwide, totaling around $1.5 billion (Rs 12,400 crore), following only the United States/Canada and China. This marked a nearly 20% increase from the previous year 2022, with Hindi cinema playing a significant role in driving this growth, thanks to several blockbuster hits.

Contrary to the trend in the previous year, where South Indian films dominated the overall business, 2023 saw Hindi cinema accounting for approximately 43% of the all-India box office, up from 30% in 2022 (excluding dubbed South Indian films).

Although this figure falls short of the 60-65% market share that Hindi cinema held before the video era, achieving a 40% plus market share in the current landscape is substantial, even though sustaining it may pose challenges.

Before the pandemic in 2019, Hindi cinema held a share of around 45%, indicating a return to a semblance of normalcy in 2023.

The challenge ahead lies in maintaining this market share, and if Hindi cinema can consistently secure around 40% of the all-India market, it would signify a healthy state for the box office.

The top ten collecting nations across the world in 2023 were as follows.

1. US / Canada - $9.07 billion (75,300 cr)
2. China - $7.71 billion (64,000 cr)
3. India - $1.50 billion (12,400 cr)
4. Japan - $1.48 billion (12,275 cr)
5. UK / Ireland - $1.36 billion (11,290 cr)
6. France - $1.35 billion (11,200 cr)
6. Germany - $1.01 billion (8400 cr)
8. South Korea - $0.97 (8050 cr)
9. Mexico - $0.94 billion (7800 cr)
10. Australia - $0.67 billion (5550 cr)
